TCF Canada Fees & Cost 2026: $390–$410 by City & Centre

Guide · Published 2026-07-26 · Updated 2026-08-26

There is no national price for TCF Canada: each exam centre sets its own fee, which is why the same exam can cost twenty dollars more at a different centre. This guide lists the TCF Canada fee currently published by seven major centres across six Canadian cities, and explains what the fee covers, whether you can get it back, and what a retake costs. Fees change without notice, so confirm the amount shown on the centre's page on the day you register.

Last checked: 2026-08-26. On that day we pulled all seven centre pages again and every TCF Canada fee matched our full 2026-08-09 review (which also covered refund terms, prep-platform prices and same-day TEF prices) and our first compilation on 2026-07-26. The full checklist is in sources and method at the end.

How much does TCF Canada cost?

At the main Canadian centres the full TCF Canada exam currently costs CAD $390 to $410: $390 in Toronto, Vancouver (Alliance Française) and Victoria; $400 in Calgary, Edmonton and Winnipeg; $410 at Ashton Testing in Vancouver. That price already covers all four skills (listening, reading, writing and speaking), and as of our 2026-08-26 re-check all seven prices are identical to what we found in July.

Prices and policies above are quoted from each centre's own site, first compiled on 2026-07-26; fees were last re-checked page by page on 2026-08-26 (refund terms on 2026-08-09), with identical results every time. Fees and terms can change at any time, so open the centre's page and confirm before you pay. Vancouver's and Victoria's TCF pages both state that prices are subject to change without notice and that members get 10% off TCF tests. We did not individually verify prices for Ottawa, Montréal and other cities; check those centres directly. For which cities have centres, see the Canada exam-centre directory.

The fee is fixed; the seat is the scarce part. TCF Canada slots in the monitored cities often fill within minutes of release. Turn on monitoring for your city and get an email the moment a seat opens. $20 CAD/month, cancel anytime.

What does the fee include? Are the four skills billed separately?

They aren't. TCF Canada is made up of 4 mandatory tests (listening comprehension, reading comprehension, written skills, verbal skills; 2 hours 47 minutes in total) and the fee buys the whole set. The Toronto centre puts it plainly in its FAQ: you cannot register for individual components. The fee also covers the statement of results issued afterwards, which is valid for 2 years from the date the results are issued.

Who sets the fee, and why does it differ by centre?

The centre does. On its official TCF Canada page, France Éducation international states that it is up to the candidate to contact the nearest approved centre, which will provide the session dates, the registration process, the format (paper or computer) and the price. In other words there is no national price list — each centre prices to its own costs, which is where the $390-to-$410 spread comes from. For the registration flow, see the TCF Canada registration guide.

Can I get a refund or change my date after registering?

At most centres, once you pay the money is gone. Toronto is the only one of the six with a published paid-transfer route. Vancouver, Victoria, Calgary and Winnipeg all state no refund and no deferment (Victoria doesn't even allow transferring your seat to someone else); Edmonton keeps the detail in its terms and conditions.

  • Toronto's window: cancel or move to another date / campus up to 15 days before a computer session or 30 days before a paper session, for a $100 fee. After that, no cancellation and no transfer: you register again and pay in full.
  • Toronto's "cancellation" returns account credit, not your money. Its FAQ states that once the registration is cancelled a credit is issued to your account, that you must re-register for another session within 6 months, and that after 6 months the exam fee expires. So the real cost of cancelling is the $100 fee plus a six-month clock, not a refund to your card.
  • Don't book two sessions as insurance in Toronto. You may hold only one active registration across its four exam centres, sessions must be at least 20 days apart, and duplicate registrations inside that window are cancelled automatically without refund. There is also no waiting list for full sessions.
  • Weather, illness and emergencies usually don't count. Winnipeg says outright that cancellations for climatic or personal reasons are not possible.
  • Arriving late counts as a no-show. Calgary states that late arrivals are not allowed in, with no refund or deferment.

So before you hit pay, lock down the travel, the time off and the logistics for that date. There is very little margin for error on this one.

Does a retake cost the full fee again?

Yes. There is no single-skill retake for TCF Canada — even if you missed the line in one skill by a few points, you sit all four again and pay the full fee a second time ($390–$410). France Éducation international allows as many attempts as you like but requires 20 days between sittings; some centres are stricter — Winnipeg's site says 30 days, and Toronto allows only one active registration at a time with at least 20 days between sessions. For the full rules, see the TCF Canada retake guide.

What's the total if I don't pass first time?

Running the prices above through the most common scenarios (amounts derived from the fees published on 2026-08-09; travel and accommodation not included):

Scenario $390 centres (Toronto / Vancouver / Victoria) $400 centres (Calgary / Edmonton / Winnipeg)
Pass first time, no prep platform$390$400
Pass first time + one PrepMyFuture licence$460 to $470 (Vancouver: $70 bundled, $80 on its own; Toronto's and Victoria's TCF pages don't list a PrepMyFuture price)$465 (Winnipeg $65) to $480 (Calgary and Edmonton $80)
Miss one skill, sit all four again$780$800
Retake plus one prep licence$850 to $860$865 to $880
Cancel in Toronto and rebook within 6 months$390 plus a $100 fee, and the credit expires after 6 monthsNone of these three publishes a paid transfer route

Ashton Testing in Vancouver ($410) sits outside the two tiers above: one pass costs $410, and missing one skill means $820 for two full sittings; the whole fee is forfeited if you cannot attend.

In other words, "missing one skill" is a three-figure mistake, not a small top-up. That's why booking early enough to actually revise matters far more than the $10 difference between cities.

What else costs money besides the exam fee?

The usual extra is prep material, and each centre prices its official partner platform differently (re-checked 2026-08-09):

  • PrepMyFuture online practice: $80 in Calgary and Edmonton, $80 in Vancouver ($70 when bundled with your TCF), $65 in Winnipeg.
  • Buying through a centre is cheaper than buying direct. Calgary's page prints both numbers side by side: PrepmyTCF is $80 through the centre against 99 € / about $161 on the platform's own site (PrepmyTEF likewise, $80 against 89 € / about $145). So check whether your centre resells it before paying the platform directly. Calgary also notes that once a code is bought it cannot be refunded or transferred.
  • Tutor-assisted version: Edmonton sells the online platform plus 2 hours of in-person private class for $235.
  • Recorrection (score review): both Vancouver and Victoria post that France Éducation international is suspending the recorrection service from 1 September 2026, expected to resume in autumn 2027. That notice was still live on both pages when we re-checked on 2026-08-09, so the suspension starts within weeks. Confirm with your centre before counting on it.
  • Travel and accommodation: if you cross provinces just to get a seat, this often costs more than the exam. Calgary explicitly notes it is not responsible for travel or accommodation expenses if a session is cancelled.

For how to prepare each skill, see the TCF Canada prep guide.

Is TEF Canada cheaper than TCF Canada? (six centres, same day)

Not always. On 2026-08-09 we pulled the TCF and TEF prices from all six centres on the same day: every one of them lists the full TEF Canada at $390, while TCF Canada is $400 in Calgary, Edmonton and Winnipeg. So in those three cities the TCF costs $10 more than the TEF at the very same centre; in Toronto, Vancouver and Victoria the two are level.

City TCF Canada (full) TEF Canada (full) Gap at the same centre / notes
Toronto$390$390Level; TEF also sells a 2-module version (listening + speaking) at $195, for citizenship and Francophone Mobility only
Vancouver$390$390Level; citizenship version $200, TEF-plus-prep package $450
Victoria$390$390 (from its TEF session listings)Level; members get 10% off TCF
Calgary$400$390TCF costs $10 more; TEF listening-and-speaking version $240
Edmonton$400$390TCF costs $10 more; its "speaking and listening" TEF sessions are listed at $195
Winnipeg$400$390TCF costs $10 more; TEF is also priced per module: reading $97.5, listening $77.5, writing $97.5, speaking $117.5

Two things follow. First, $10 is not a reason to switch exams: whether you can get a seat and whether the question format suits you matter far more, and the full comparison is in TCF vs TEF Canada. Second, TEF is sold by module at some centres while TCF never is: Winnipeg prices the four TEF papers separately (they add up to exactly $390), whereas none of the six offers a single-skill TCF Canada, so one weak skill means paying the whole fee again. Whether a single-module result is usable for your application is for the centre and IRCC to say, so don't assume it.

How do I avoid wasting a registration fee?

The expensive mistake isn't the $410 — it's grabbing whatever far-away seat is left because you ran out of time, then paying again after a bad sitting. Two practical habits: have your account, passport number and card ready long before slots drop rather than typing them during the rush (see can't get a TCF slot?); and set up a seat alert for your city so you hear the moment seats open and can book when you're actually ready, instead of taking any session at the deadline — see the monitoring service for covered cities.

Sources and how we check them

Every number on this page is read from the centre's own published page, not repeated from someone else's summary. We fetch each centre's page in full through the same pipeline that runs our six-city seat monitoring, read the fee and the terms out of the source, and link the page here so you can check it yourself. First compiled 2026-07-26, last re-checked page by page on 2026-08-09, with the six TCF fees identical both times.
