TCF Canada Re-evaluation (2026): Suspended for Sessions From 1 September

    Updated 2026-10-22

FEI stopped accepting re-correction requests for TCF speaking and writing from sessions held on or after 1 September 2026, for about one year; centres expect it back in fall 2027. If you sat the TCF on or before 31 August 2026, the request is still possible through your test centre, within 30 days of receiving your results. Listening and reading were never re-correctable. Below: what FEI and each centre say, how speaking and writing are already marked, and what to do instead.

    Can I still request a TCF re-evaluation in 2026?

Only if your exam was before 1 September 2026. FEI's notice is worded by session date: "from TCF sessions of 1 September", re-correction requests for speaking and writing are no longer accepted, for a period of about one year. A session on or before 31 August 2026 is still eligible; Ashton Testing says the same. Every Canadian centre we checked has posted the suspension:

Which parts of the TCF can be re-evaluated?

Speaking and writing only. Listening and reading answer sheets are marked by optical reading against FEI's scoring algorithms, so there is nothing to re-assess. FEI's notice and every centre notice above concern the two productive papers.

Is a TCF re-evaluation worth it?

Know first that your speaking and writing were already marked twice. FEI describes its marking this way:

    • Speaking: the examiner marks you on the day and records the interview; the recording then goes to a second marker trained by FEI. The two marks are independent and double-blind (neither sees the other's level).
    • Writing: marked twice, independently and double-blind, by FEI's markers. On computer-based sessions the first marking may be done by FIDELIA, FEI's automated marking aid; the second marking stays human.
    • Large gap: when the two marks differ a lot, a third marking is done automatically.

So a re-correction is a further look at a paper that has already had two independent marks. It mattered most when one productive skill sat a point under the line you needed, for example 9 instead of 10 in writing for NCLC 7. For sessions from 1 September 2026 the question is moot until the service returns.

How long does a TCF re-evaluation take?

Neither FEI nor the centres above publish a turnaround for re-correction. For a session that is still eligible, ask your centre when you file. One rule to know if you book again while waiting: Ashton Testing says the fee for a new session will not be refunded, even if the re-evaluation raises your score.

What can I do instead while it is suspended?

    • Retake. FEI requires 20 days between two sittings; see the retake guide for each centre's rule and which result to submit.
    • Fix the weak skill first. The score converter shows how many points each skill needs for the next level.
    • Consider the TEF. IRCC accepts both; the differences are in TCF vs TEF Canada.
    • Get a seat. A retake means booking again; see upcoming dates by centre.

Something went wrong on exam day. Can I complain after the results?

No: report it on the day. FEI's candidate duties ask you to report any problem during the session on the exam day itself, and say no appeal will be accepted once the results certificate has been issued. Tell the invigilator and ask the centre to record it before you leave.

Sources and how we checked them

Read on each organisation's own page on 2026-10-22: FEI's TCF Canada page (suspension notice), TCF marking page (double marking, third marking, FIDELIA) and candidate rights and duties (report problems on the day), plus the centre pages in the table above. If FEI announces the restart, this page will follow it.

This page summarises published rules; it is not immigration advice. For your own session, your test centre's answer governs.
