How TCF Canada Boosts Your Express Entry Score (French Categories)
Canada's Express Entry ranking system (CRS) awards extra points for French ability. Even if French is not your first language, reaching a solid TCF Canada level can meaningfully lift your ranking.
How many points does French add?
Under recent rules, applicants who reach NCLC 7 or higher in French earn additional points — and more if their English also reaches a certain level (up to 50 points in recent years). IRCC adjusts the exact values, so always confirm the current rules.
What French level do you need?
To earn the French points you generally need NCLC 7 or higher in all four skills — listening, speaking, reading and writing (it's your weakest skill that counts, not the average). Below NCLC 7, those extra points may not apply. So focus your prep on your weakest skill and bring all four up to the target level, rather than pushing just one higher.
French-language category draws
Beyond the general rounds, IRCC also runs category-based draws targeting specific occupations and French-language proficiency. Cut-off scores for the French category are often lower than general draws, giving strong-French candidates extra chances at an invitation.
What this means for you
- French is one of the few abilities that both adds bonus points and can trigger its own category draw — excellent value.
- TCF Canada is one of the IRCC-recognised French tests; its results can be used for Express Entry.
- The sooner you earn a qualifying French result, the sooner you're in a stronger position — and the first step is often simply securing an exam slot.
